Man putteth forth his hand upon the rock; he overturneth the
mountains by the roots. Job 28:9
Who is a wise man?
James 3:13-18
Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of
a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.
There is the wisdom of this world which is sensual, devilish, and there is the
wisdom from above, that is peaceable, gentle etc.
The one who confides in the wisdom of this world is being deceived by satan,
the god of this world. Satan will make fools of all those who fall for his devices.
The man of the world can look very impressive. The wisdom he has to take from
the earth hidden treasures, is quite amazing. In Job 28:1 we read, there is a
vein for silver, and a place for gold where they find it. He goes on to say that
man is able to get bread from the earth and the stones of sapphire and the dust
of gold. Verse nine says, “He putteth forth his hand upon the rock; and
overturneth the mountains by the roots.” Man’s eyes are able to see many
precious things and he has the ability to find them. It is amazing that men are
able to literally turn over mountains and mountains of rock and earth and find
the treasure that is so small but in their eyes very precious.
Then in verse twelve we come across this very important question. “ But where
shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?”
“Man knoweth not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the
living. The depth saith, It is not in me: and the sea saith, It is not with me.
It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof.
It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the
sapphire. The gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it shall
not be for jewels of fine gold. No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls:
for the price of wisdom is above rubies.” Job 28: 13-18
Thanks be to God because he does not leave us in darkness but he goes on to
declare unto us right here in verse twenty eight, where this mysterious wisdom
can be found.
“And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to
depart from evil is understanding.”
The world by her wisdom knows not God. (See 1 Cor. 21) It is difficult for a worldly-wise person to see his need for God. The proud arrogant sinner does not fear God.
The wisdom of the world is sensual (Ja.3: 15) and is centered on satisfying the lust of the flesh. The word of God teaches us; “For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh: but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.” Ro.8: 5
Man was created by God to bear his holy image; God is a triune (three in one) being, Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Man also is a triune being, spirit, soul, and body. (See 1 Th.5: 25) The body was given to man that it could become the body of Christ. Our Heavenly Father provided every thing for man that he would ever need. Nevertheless satan deceived Eve into partaking of the forbidden tree believing that if she ate of the tree she would have all that she needed for her body. This is how the lust of the flesh entered into Adams race. Jesus endeavored to bring us back to reality and taught that man does not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. Mt: 4:4 The soul and the spirit cannot be fed by bread. Because of sin our bodies have become very demanding they are always crying for more of everything, sleep, food, comfort, etc. The body wants much more than it needs. It is like a consuming fire, the more fuel you give it the hotter it burns and the more it demands. Sin, once entrenched into the flesh, brings man captive to her lusts. For some it is the love of alcohol, they cannot get enough; no matter how devastated it leaves them, they keep returning for more. Satan our enemy works hard to place the hook (the love for alcohol) into our flesh, and then he plays us like a fish on a line. For others he places the hook of fornication or adultery for others idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, murders, etc.
The hook that is most to be feared is the love of money, for the love of money is the root of all evil. (See 1Tim 6:10) The love of money will drive man to do all evil to fill that lust; covet, steal, cheat, envy, jealousy, hatred, murder, it will even
bring him to betray Jesus, like Judas did, for thirty pieces of silver.
The word of God warns us that men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, will believe that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. (flee) 1Tim.6: 5
They like to boast how God has blessed them with riches implying that this is what you should desire. Get away fast, before the hook is set.
“Godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. Having food and raiment let us be therewith content.” 1 Tim.6: 6,7, 8 Those who walk after the flesh know nothing about contentment because the flesh is never satisfied.
On the other hand they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts, there of. Gal.5: 24 He then finds contentment, which is worth more than all the riches of this world.
The one who abides in Christ Jesus and walks in the Spirit will bear the fruit of the Spirit; love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance. The very reason that God created man was that he might bear His image and the soul that bears not the image of God cannot be content.
Who is the wise man? Those who know where the gold and silver are hidden and are able to extract it, look very wise. But the one, who fears God and discovers the wisdom of God departing from evil, comes into good understanding; he has found the same wisdom that was there when all things were created.
Remember, those who desire to be rich will be pierced through with many sorrows. (Read 1 Tim.6: 9) When you talk with many professing believers today you see this sorrow. The hook has been placed in their hearts. They are not content. They have believed a lie, beloved let us seek for the wisdom that is from God and not of the world.
